English has been accredited as a means of communication on a global basis. Countries having recognized English as a medium of instruction have been placed at a much higher position compared to those that haven’t. Recognizing English as the first language has turned learners to grasp it better and be an expert by the time they grew up. Being a parent, you must be noticing that kids pick up the English language better as they learn it in school. There is a popular saying and a proverb that was followed from that prehistoric age, ‘Dream in English’. Perhaps this proverb has a great effect on the society that attempts to turn modern all of a sudden.

Learning my mother tongue is important, right?

Without knowing your mother tongue well, you cannot be an expert in any foreign language. Kids get educated in English and other foreign language, but they are completely ignored out of their mother tongue or a native language. But, there are instances that support the fact that learning the mother tongue is quite important.

• Learning expression is very important: When a child is being taught his mother tongue, he would learn to express certain phrases. He can read the literature and books that’s being written in his own language, that’s a plus point. If he is being able to read novels and books, he would be able to know his culture and the roots, especially.

• Knowing the roots is important: Knowing the roots is important. As a child he should be taught about the history of his place, the people and the culture mainly. Each place has a history and each language has its own specialty. Reading mythology would enable a child to imbibe knowledge that can inculcate some life lessons. Just take for example, Indian epics Mahabharata and Ramayana has taught moral lessons to many. Without knowing the mythology and the characters, a child won’t be able to relate life.

• Parents can teach their kids the mother tongue: The first and foremost duty of a parent would be to teach the kid the mother tongue. A very simple way would be interacting with the child in the native language. In case both parents share the same language, the child would learn that in a crisp manner.

Learning one’s culture would empower a child with knowledge and a good moral education, mainly. The schools takes the responsibility of teaching science, geography, computers and mathematics. But, while it comes to taking up the native language or mother tongue it might be the sole responsibility of the parent or the family to teach the child. Being familiar to the mother tongue is important. Knowing the who’s who of your culture would be a great help while your child tries to stand out from the crowd. Or maybe in other words, I can say that the child tries to establish himself in the crowd.
