When the West Bengal Chief Minister Smt Mamata Banerjee announced at a press meet that schools in the state will reopen from 16th November, citizens heaved a sigh of relief. Various sets of people had wide-ranging reasons to be happy with this announcement. Whilst the students are happy that they could AT LONG LAST physically attend schools, meet old friends, some students who belong to the marginalised sections of society and could not afford to own an android phone are happy that now they will be able to catch up with the lessons they have missed in this long gap. Moreover, the net connection is not at all up to the mark in the far-flung semi-urban townships and villages and even if one had a smartphone it was of no use. The students have to station themselves on the barren lands and fields to catch the net signals for the tutorial classes. The higher classes students are glad because they will be able to attend practical classes now which is very important. Almost all of them in various age categories are elated that in case of any difficulty in understanding a particular chapter they can now physically meet their teacher and get the issues resolved as direct face to face interface is a very important teaching tool.

The teachers are now relieved that no longer will they have to be in tension to comprehend whether any particular section of the syllabi or course materials have been grasped by the students or not. Face to face interactions with the students is very necessary, the teachers confide, to gauge the progress of any particular student. Moreover, solutions to any problem, especially in science subjects and mathematics, are solved much easier through these direct interactions. Already the institutions have started their classes by maintaining strict COVID 19 protocol like prior sanitisation of classrooms, labs, prayer areas and washrooms regularly before, during and after classes. Frequent washing of hands, usage of sanitisers and thermal guns, maintenance of social distances in classrooms and last but not least, proper usage of masks are being strictly ensured.

Shri Bratya Basu, Honourable Education Minister of our state has clarified that it is not compulsory to attend classes if the parents of any particular student wish so.

Indeed COVID 19 has drastically changed the education scenario forever globally. Online classes, e-learning and classes through digital platforms are the orders of the day. Supporters of online learning advocate that based on certain researches it has been found that retention of information is more if students attend online classes. Apart from this, the chance to contact COVID comes down drastically even from asymptomatic cases. On the other hand, some guardians are strongly advocating the returning of full normal classes as they feel their children are getting addicted to mobile games and other despicable internet activities.

At the end of the day, all concerned must ensure that students achieve the maximum benefit out of the new normal situation post-COVID restrictions.
