It’s May,almost half the year and is the month of earth and flowers which are summer and spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. Let us glance through some of the significant dates of May.
May 1 —- On this day in 1897, the Ramakrishna Mission Order was established at Belur. This year R K Mission celebrates its 125th foundation year.
May 1 —- International Labour Day is observed to commemorate the labour strike at the Haymarket Square, Chicago in 1886 when the workers demanded a better working ambience. The day is celebrated throughout the world by workers and labour unions.
May 3 —- World Press Freedom Day gains significance as there are allegations of misuse of press freedom in today’s world. UNESCO on this day gives a clarion call to all press freedom bodies globally to assess the exact status of freedom of the press.
May 3 —- The Global Initiative for Asthma { GINA} observes World Asthma Day every year on the first Tuesday of May to raise consciousness and awareness regarding asthma around the world.
May 4 —- To commemorate the painful death of five Australian firefighters in the bushfire of 1998, International Firefighters Day is observed worldwide to remind the world of the conscientious duties the firefighters undertake to save properties and lives by risking their own.
May 8 —- Thalessamia is a serious blood disorder and the affected person has to undergo regular blood transfusions to survive. World Thalassemia Day is observed globally, to raise awareness regarding this disorder.
May 8 —- World Red Cross Day and Red Crescent Day are observed to commemorate the birthday of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Henry Dunant the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Red Cross has since its inception changed the concept of humanitarian activities on our planet through its multi activities.
May 9 —- Rabindra Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore is observed on a grand scale not only in India but also in Bangladesh. Mind-blowing cultural programmes throughout the regions are held to observe the day.
May 11 —- Every year since 1999, National Technology Day is being observed to commemorate the Pokhran Nuclear blast of 1998, the mission of which was successfully led by Professor A P J Abdul Kalam who later on became our President.
May 12 —- Nurses throughout the world are one of the most competent and assiduous caregivers and the whole health system would collapse without them. To honour the services of the nurses, the International Nurses Day is being observed since 1965.
May 15 —- Every year a suitable theme is chosen and observed to commemorate the International Day of the Families for all personal issues and bondings related to the family.
May 17 —- World Telecommunication Day is observed since 1969 to commemorate the formation of the International Telecommunication Union and the signing of the International Telegraph Convention in 1865.
May 17 —- Hypertension is the source of many serious health disorders like high blood pressure which can lead to strokes. To make people aware of all the ill effects of hypertension, World Hypertension Day is observed since 2006 on this day.
May 18 —- To honour those scientists and medicare professionals who gave away their most precious time and energy to develop a vaccine for AIDS, the World AIDS Vaccine Day is observed to thank the kind-hearted souls for their efforts to discover the vaccine.
May 20 —- Metrology is the scientific study of weights and measures. World Metrology Day is observed by many countries and the scientific community to commemorate the scientific study of units.
May 21 —- Terrorism is a big menace the world is facing today and to keep people abreast of this nuisance and at the same time pay homage to the victims, National Anti Terrorism Day is observed.
May 22 —- International day of Bio-Diversity is observed annually to make the general public educated on the tremendous importance biodiversity plays in today’s world, especially after the pandemic.
May 31 —-Tobacco causes immense harm to the human body and to make aware people of this hazard, Anti Tobacco day is observed globally.
