Importance  of  mental  health  for  students..

When the topic of the mental health of students comes to your mind the root causes of ailing mental health that strike immediately are – stress from studies, stress for exams and project works, the ongoing pandemic, offline exams, strains in friendship, depression or emotional blues because of staying in a hostel etc. Mental health covers them all and much more. The ambit of mental health is growing and is rapidly snowballing into a major health concern. Counsellors and psychologists emphatically point out that our immediate feelings, other normal feelings, thoughts, actions, and almost everything similar come under the purview of mental health. To cap it all, mental health involves our sentimental, societal and psychosomatic comfort zones. It should be the prerogative of the students and their guardians to see and maintain a perfect balance of all these sectors.

Today having perfect mental health is as essential as having sound physical health and stamina for all students to grow up in life. This is the age of harsh competition and tension in every sphere of life whether it is within the four walls of the educational institutions or the playfields or for the pursuit of career growth. The students have to be prepared to confront the challenges and be the winner with flying colours and come out mentally unwavering from any problematic circumstances.  To twist the knife in the wound, the ongoing pandemic has exacerbated the situation.

The parents, teachers and tutors have an exemplary role to play in identifying and suitably addressing the mental health of the concerned students in this regard. The sooner it is classified and remedial actions are implemented, the better for the students. Mental health and academic performance are in sync with each other. It has been observed that a student who is mentally depressed finds it very hard to cope with academic pressure as well as pressure from classmates. Concentration, motivation and the entire learning process takes an about-turn for these unfortunate pupils.

Guardians, teachers and educators have a key role to play over here. We discuss here certain easy steps to keep the mental health of the students in a top-notch position. After all learned people always say —- prevention is better than cure.

Be positive —- always – Stay positive always, however worse, the situation might be. Negative thoughts and thoughts you know that will lead nowhere clearly need to be shunned ASAP. There is no point in keeping oneself engaged with unhelpful thoughts. After all, negativity does not help at all.

Stay connected – with family members, friends you can trust– Every student during his tenure has had to face unforeseen challenges. It is almost a part of life.  He feels perplexed, baffled and mystified in such situations. In such cases, it is required that the student should openly discuss the hassles he is facing with his family, friends, tutors, teachers as well as in his friends’ circle.

Tension is a part of life, try to relax — One has to accept that tension is a part of our lives today and is going to stay with little options of avoiding it. Students should cultivate any form of extracurricular activities preferably physical activities like going to the gym, yoga exercises, meditation under proper guidance and deep breathing exercises.

Set achievable goals every day — One should inculcate in oneself the aptitude of planning and setting goals, priorities and objectives. They can be segregated and categorized from the most important to the lesser important. This exercise and its appropriate implementation will be a great benefit for the students.

Have a healthy diet, try to stay away from junk food — Once in a blue moon partying with buddies, having aerated drinks and foodstuff like rolls, pao bhaji, samosas, kachori, pakora and potato chips are okay,—— occasionally you need to chill out. But students must be firm in their minds not to have these regularly and develop a healthy diet.

Stop brooding — Avoid making a fuss about everything and stop grousing for anything and everything incorrigible on earth. Stop it and see the depression weaken away.

And always remember failure is not the end of the world.
