The education scenario since the last two years has seen a drastic change globally as well as in our country, the reasons of which are known to everybody. The word ‘ new normal ‘ is the top buzzword now in the whole and the education field in particular. E-learning and online education have become the two important keywords today. The number of students opting for online courses and online tutorials along with career advancement courses has grown manifold in these two years. Almost every semester, the number of students enrolling themselves in e-learning and online courses is growing. Mainstream media reports inform quoting certain data that the New Education Policy coupled with the outbreak of COVID 19 and pandemic has resulted in the rush of several enrolments for online education and e-learning.
Online education and e-learning providers have reasons to feel elated. The number of courses offered online has increased more than double since 2017 till mid-2021 which is surely a healthy growth. One of the main reasons that industry insiders attribute, is the impact of value addition that the students and the career aspirants understood and have felt while the lockdown was imposed in the country. Value addition irrespective of what all has been taught in the normal classes are instrumental and helpful in life for growth and career progression. Supplementary learning is always very important in any field of education in this unforgiving era of competition and professionalism.
The students and their guardians have realised that online education and e-learning helps to develop advanced skills, knowledge and technical expertise apart from the school syllabi. One has to be several levels up above the other students in the field of education and when it comes to job searches the students with supplementary knowledge will surely have an edge over others. Specialisation, knack and adroitness coupled with proficiency are the orders of the day.
It is estimated that from 1.6 million users in 2016, by the end of this year approximately 9.6 million students will be enrolling for online education and e-learning. This means a whopping growth of about six times and in the future, e-learning and online education will be a mammoth power in the education scenario. One has to accept that e-learning and online education has almost changed the education platform in our country and also globally.
According to two round surveys conducted by UN bodies like UNESCO, UNICEF and The World Bank a very interesting light has come to the fore. Almost every nation worldwide has successfully introduced e-learning and online education in their educational sectors. It is worthwhile to note that almost 89% of these countries have improved their technology to give more access and better internet connectivity to their respective student communities.
Today e-learning and online education have become synonymous and have completely revamped and reoriented the education sector.
One of the biggest advantages of e-learning and online education which the educationists have agreed is that the students tend to grasp more of the course contents as most of the contents are in the audiovisual medium. The retention power is much more in the case of e-learning. On average, it has been affirmed that learning process time is reduced by 25% to 60% in the case of e-learning as compared to the traditional form of teaching.
From the students’ viewpoint also e-learning and online education are highly beneficial. One does not need to travel to the institute and can comfortably attend classes thus saving on the transportation cost and the time. Moreover one can always recapitulate on the lectures and the study materials over and over again from the internet. Specialised and job oriented courses can be fruitfully attended by the students by keeping his or her basic routine and schedule intact.
E-learning and online education will gain more weight age and importance in the coming months which is good for the students as well, the teaching community and the society as a whole.
