Global warming — a blazing issue now.
If there is a single point of concern, anxiety and apprehension that is disquieting the environmentalists, the NGOs, the respective governments, scientists and the common people the world over, the term is global warming. We have already started to tolerate the hazards of global warming, and we are observing every day with distress that there are significant changes in the weather and climatic conditions during the last few decades or so. Immediate attention must be given by all concerned to this alarm otherwise we and our future generations especially are in for a catastrophe.
Global warming – The gradual increase in the earth’s temperature due to pollution of all sorts, the population burst and other pollutants are acutely responsible for the swelling of the CFC and carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Scientists also call this effect an increase in carbon footprint. The iniquitous Greenhouse Effect is the root cause of global warming. People are feeling incarcerated and there is no direction to break free.
Let us first pinpoint the major causes of global warming. We will see and disturbingly figure out that almost all the key causes are in a vicious circle. Observers point out that over and excessive usage of transportation and vehicles, drilling for oil, setting up of more power plants, industrial waste, and excessive usage of power and gas for setting up and operations of new industries and factories are primarily responsible for global warming. But if you look at it from the other side of the table, for rapid industrial growth, economic growth and urbanisation, one just cannot avoid such activities. Scientists confirm that even if students are studying late at night, or maybe a mere late-night get together of friends and acquaintances will add to an increase in carbon footprint. On top of all these, carbon emissions from air travel add to the woe. The growth of consumerism rapidly and the unplanned disposal of industrial waste also are a cause of global warming. At the same time when the economy grows, one has to accept that covetousness will rise progressively.
We are all experiencing the ill effects of global warming in one way or the other. The scorching summer and the parched environment outdoor as we step outside our home or business premises at midday are a true testimony to the effect. The changes in the climatic conditions are the best possible example of global warming. There was hardly any Nor’wester recently except the one a few days back when two students died in a tragic accident at the Lakes. The UNESCO world heritage site, Sunderbans faces the brunt of global warming as more and more islands are getting submerged gradually due to the rise in sea level. Lots of the priceless Sundari trees are getting destroyed as a result of this. We must realise, act and save the Sunderbans from any further destruction because had it not been for this heritage delta, Kolkata would have been battered by cyclones. An increase in sea levels will also mean an enhancement of cyclonic activities displacing thousands of hapless people, destroying agricultural land, flooding and causing immense hardship thus hampering economic development. Health risks and health concerns arise and the quality of water suffers badly.
To combat global warming the authorities, local self-help bodies and most important the general public must effectively join hands to declare war against global warming. Right at the onset, we must teach the kids and make the young generation fully aware of this threat which in the days to come will harm them more. Very astute use of ACs, room lighting and room heaters during the respective seasons and times of the day is very important. The more we commute by eco-friendly transportations like e scooters and electric / battery charged vehicles, the better for us and our future generations. Strict and stern checking of an increase in carbon footprint in our surroundings and vicinity is of paramount importance as also the routine campaign of planting more trees and increasing natural vegetation in our environs.
All of us must take a vow to effectively combat global warming and carbon footprints. We can no longer procrastinate and go on digging our graves.
